Sowie Mountains and secrets of the past

18.03.2017 The Sudetes are known for numerous and interesting mountain ranges. One of the more eagerly visited here are the Sowie Mountains, known for the numerous underground buildings created by the Nazis during World War II. These mysterious undergrounds and related historical riddles are the main reason for the popularity of the Owl Mountains. These mountains are also famous for more traditional attractions, i.e. beautiful nature and attractive views. Lookout towers, like the one located in Wielka Sowa, make it easier for tourists to admire mountain panoramas. The Sowie Mountains are located between the Bardzkie Mountains and the Wałbrzyskie Mountains. Their highest peak is 1015 m a.s.l. Great Owl with an interesting lookout tower from 1906. The biggest natural attraction in this mountain range are the mouflons, i.e. the ancestors of the popular domestic sheep. Where did the mouflons come from? Their herd was brought from Corsica to the Sudetes in the early 20th century. German underground, mouflons and lookout tower are not all the attractions of the Sowie Mountains. It is also worth seeing here the fortress in Srebrna Góra, built in 1765-1777 on the order of the Prussian ruler Frederick II. Its attractiveness is primarily determined by its size - it is the largest mountain fortress in Europe. Another interesting monument in this part of the Sudetes is the Gothic castle Grodno from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
