The castle is located near Jelenia Góra-Sobieszów, on the top of the Chojnik mountain in Karkonosze. This mountain rises to a height of 627 meters above sea level, and from its south-eastern side there is a 150-meter cliff falling to the so-called Hell Valley. The stronghold is located within the nature reserve, which is an exclave of the Karkonosze National Park. The brick castle was built in the 1650s. The first written mention of the castle comes from 1364. On September 9, 1399, the staroste of the Świdnica-Jawor principality Benesz from Choustniki, with the consent of the Czech king Wenceslaus IV, pledged the castle Gotsche II to Schof, reserving the right to buy the pledge. On May 16, 1400, Gotsche II paid the mortgage bond. The royal staroste also had the right to draw income from the castle. On October 8, 1418, the Czech king granted the sons of Gotsche II paternal rights. The document was confirmed by the staroste Heinze von Laasan on May 5, 1419. From that moment the castle belonged to the Schaffgotsch family. On May 7, 1393, Gotsche II Schoff founded the altar of St. Jadwiga. He kept the patronage law for himself and his righteous successors. In the first half of the 16th century, probably due to Turkish terror, the buildings were modernized. The castle was surrounded by walls with shooting ranges adapted for the use of firearms. Presumably in this period, on the eastern and northeastern sides of the lower castle, a kitchen with a large chimney was created, buildings at the lower gate and in the inter-corridor (commandant's house and stables). Then, or slightly later, sgraffito rustication of the facade was made, semicircular attics and Renaissance stonework were added. Probably around 1560 a low bastion was established on the north side. In the years 1588-1589, the carpenter Jakob Liewig from Szklarska Poręba, at the behest of Johann Ulrich Schaffgotsch, raised the table with a half-timbered, octagonal superstructure with an onion-shaped helmet. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was owned by Hans Ulrich von Schaffgotsch. During the Thirty Years' War he was a supporter of Emperor Ferdinand II and served in his army under the command of Albrecht Wallenstein. When the emperor lost confidence in his general, in 1634 Hans Ulryk was arrested as his subordinate and a year later, after being accused of treason, he was beheaded. All Schaffgotsch family goods were confiscated. In 1641, the son of Hans Ulryk, Krzysztof Leopold, recovered most of the lost property, including the Chojnik castle. The condition was the transition to Catholicism. On August 31, 1675, a lightning struck the castle during a storm. A fire broke out, which affected the upper castle and the top of the tower. The building quickly became a tourist attraction visited by patients from Cieplice. In 1822, a point of rental of guides and porters was organized under the castle. An inn was opened in the castle ruins, in which commemorative books were kept. In 1823, a tower staircase was built. In 1860, the northern bastion was adapted to be a tourist hostel. After World War II, the castle was opened in 1945. Two years later, the hostel was reopened. Renovation works were carried out in 1949. At that time, a small museum was also organized in the so-called hall of the gothic hostel. In January 1963, due to the threat of collapse, the castle was closed. The renovation began in the autumn of the same year. It formally ended only 10 years later. Already in November 1973, Sanepid closed the shelter. After renovation, they were opened in June 1975. In the 70s of the 20th century the walls of the tower were strengthened, and in the 1980s the kitchen was rebuilt, the courtyard and cisterns were removed from rubble. Since 1991, one of the largest crossbow tournaments in Poland "For the Golden Belt of the Chojnik Castle" has been held at the castle. In 1993 the castle became the seat of the Knightly Brotherhood of the Chojnik Castle, which took over the organization of the tournament. In 1993-1994 a metal staircase to the tower was made and the guard porch was reconstructed. In 2007, a granite monument was erected to commemorate the visit of Karol Wojtyła in 1956 with a group of students.
