The castle was probably built at the beginning of the 16th century, originally a building in the Renaissance style. Initially it belonged to Hans von Dyhern. In the mid-18th century, it belonged to Count von Promnitz, who in 1765 gave it to his nephew, Count Christian Friedrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. On January 11, 1904, the castle hosted the wedding of Armgardess of the Countess zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, the lady of the German Empress, daughter of Count Udu zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, the then owner of the castle. At that time she married the commander-lieutenant Oskar Count von Platten zu Hallermund. Emperor Wilhelm II participated in the ceremony. It was one of the best known and most frequently described weddings in contemporary Prussia. The building remained in the hands of the family zu Stolberg-Wernigerode until 1945. In 1964 it was destroyed in a fire. Only ruins have survived to this day.
