The first mention of a medieval castle dates from 1159. It was a fortified town of Bobrzany. In 1175, Grodziec together with the castle was the property of Prince Bolesław I the High. The next owner of the castle was the prince Świdnicko-Jawor Bolko I, who expanded his seat in the years 1296-1301. The next owners were: prince Bolesław III Rozrzutny, knight Budziwój of Niedźwiedzice and Chojnów, prince of Legnica Frederick I and prince of Legnica Frederick II. Then the castle was expanded again, and stone was the main material used in the expansion. The building was then erected on a hexagon plan with towers in the corners and a four-sided tower. At the beginning of the 16th century, a new building was erected on the north-west side of the site. palace. During the Hussite wars the building was conquered and plundered by Hussite troops. At the time when the owner was Frederick I, the castle became quite a powerful stone stronghold modeled on the Legnica castle. From 1522 to 1524, another extension of the castle in the Renaissance style took place, where two more towers were erected on the north and south. At that time, Wendelin Rosskopf from Zgorzelec managed the works. In the second half of the sixteenth century, the tenant of Grodziec was Leonard von Skopp, and then Henryk XI was based here. During the 30-year war, in September 1633, a large part of the castle was destroyed by fire, in the following years becoming an increasingly larger ruin. In the years 1633-1672 a partial renovation was carried out. In 1675, the castle becomes the property of Emperor Leopold I, who 5 years later gives it as a pledge to Count Walter von Gallas. Baron Hans von Frankenberg became the next owner in 1700, and in 1749 field marshal Count Frederick Leopold von Gessler. From 1800, the castle was owned by Count Hans Heinrich VI von Hochberg from Książ and Mieroszów. During his time, renovation works were undertaken in the castle. Rebuilt among others part of the palatium, some rooms filled with souvenirs and made available for tourists to explore. At that time, the castle was considered the first monument in Europe specially adapted for tourist purposes. In 1823, the castle belonged to Wilhelm Chrystian Benecke from Berlin, and in 1899 the estate was purchased by Willibald von Dirksen. In 1906, another renovation of the castle began, the works were carried out on the basis of a design by Bodo Ebhardt. The last owner of the castle was Herbert von Dirksen, a Nazi politician and Hitler's trusted associate. In the years 1939–45 he often stayed in Grodziec, where at the end of the war he was first captured by the Soviets, and then deported by German agents deep into the Reich. In 1945, the castle contained exhibits from Wroclaw museums and the Berlin State Library. In the 1960s, the castle was the property of the Poviat Eldership in Złotoryja. In 1978, it belonged to the Złotoryja commune, and now the castle is leased by Zenon Bernacki [4]. In the years 2004–2005 it was the place of film production by Swedish, French, Belgian and Russian television. The castle also hosts regional and international events: - Legnica-Brest Knight's Tournament for the Castellan's Silver Ring, - International Feast of Borderlands, - Silesian Song Festival, - Agrotourism Wine and Mead Festival.
