The Gold Museum in Złotoryja was established in July 1978 on a social initiative, and also with the help of the city authorities, due to the mining works of the deposit in the mine that once operated in this area. The building at ul. Alley 2, which was built in the mid-eighteenth century and incorporated into earlier defensive walls. Until 1998, it was called the Social Museum of the Złotoryja Region. Most of the objects open to the public come from the collection of Leopold Schmeterling. The collections contain objects from various fields: geological, bibliophilic, numismatic and archeological. The facility also organizes exhibitions related to gold mining. There are also many lectures in the field of earth sciences as well as meetings with collectors.
