Medieval building, significantly expanded in the years 1585–1596 in the Renaissance style, and converted into the Baroque style in the 17th century. The castle was the residence of Wrocław bishops until 1810. It is not known exactly when the walls of the medieval castle were built. The castellan stronghold, mentioned in the papal bull of Hadrian IV as early as 1155, was finally passed by Henry Probus, pursuant to a will from 1290, to the bishops of Wrocław. Thus, the long-term local dispute between Probus and Bishop Tomasz II over these goods ended. In 1810, as a result of secularization, the city and the castle became the property of the state. A stronghold built on a granite hill. The original medieval castle was located where the eastern part of the northern wing of the building is currently located. It was a three-part building on a rectangular plan with dimensions of 11.5 × 22 m. From the same period comes the preserved four-sided tower crowned with machiculas. The whole was connected by defensive walls and surrounded by a moat. The north wall of the tower was decorated with the coat of arms of Bishop Jerin surrounded by John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. Inside, rooms have been preserved for convicts and prisoners. As part of the reconstruction, the castle gained artillery defense ranges, bastions and a new gate neck. In the 16th century, west and south wings were added with arcaded cloisters, and thus the internal courtyard was closed. The castle rooms were decorated in the Renaissance style, portals decorated with floral and animal motifs in sgraffito technique. Fragments of the Renaissance ceiling from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries with profiled beams covered with flower paintings have been preserved. Subsequent reconstructions in the Baroque period changed the appearance of the castle. First of all, the interior of the chambers was changed, the windows were enlarged, an internal staircase was added, and outside, from the courtyard side, a circular entrance pavilion with wide, gently rising stairs, allowing the bishop to bring in a litter (so-called horse stairs). An old, deep well built in the courtyard gained a casing resembling a gazebo in the 19th century. The preserved buildings are a small part of the original layout.
