It was established in 1981 and includes within its borders three mountain ranges: the Śnieżnik Massif, Bialskie Mountains and Złote Mountains as well as a fragment of a low range called Krowiarki. The area of the Park is 28,800 ha, and its protection zone is 19,900 ha. The highest hill is the peak of Śnieżnik, which is 1425 m a.s.l. The park's topography is very varied and it is characterized by the occurrence of contrasting landscapes: from high mountain valleys, through the landscapes of older mountains and old river valleys. The western, steep slopes of the Śnieżnik massif cut through numerous valleys, and the waterfalls formed on the rocky thresholds are an additional attraction of the area.
